Mahogany Books

Mahogany Books is an online bookstore that focuses on books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora.  Searching ‘hair’ or ‘natural hair’ within the site yields a list of books, ranging from children’s picture books to historical books.  This website is a good resource for someone looking for a well curated list of books and resources with a Black focus.

Essence

Essence has a portion of their online magazine dedicated to Black hair.  It includes a variety of articles and videos on braids, hair products and tools, as well as natural hair.  Beyond the hair care advice are articles concerning natural hair in the workplace.  This website provides the latest hair styling trends as well as issues in the Black hair movement.

JSTOR DAILY

Under the Politics and Government section of JSTOR Daily, there is a article about the politics of Black hair.  It focuses on the Civil Rights issues that often arise from workplace discrimination towards natural Black hair and the history of Black hair in America.  This article provides many citations within the text that link to further journal articles.  This website would be useful to find a further list of articles about the political history of Black hair in America.

Hype Hair

This website is dedicated to Black hair care, trends, and news.  It also includes industry news related to Black hair as well as a small section on the website for men’s hair.  This website is a good resource as it contains up to date information on Black hair trends and politics.

Teen Vogue

This article appears on the Teen Vogue website under the Style section.  It investigates the history of black hair discrimination leading up to the signing of Senate Bill 188.  Bill 188, often referred to as the CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair), makes hair discrimination illegal.  This article includes recent news stories and historical examples that show the discrimination faced in schools and the workplace by those with natural hair.
